HINTS AND TIPS!
Making Image Links Say Something Useful
Hey, let's say you grab an Edmund Scientific image link from LinkShare. You put it up on your web site and it looks pretty nice sitting there. Somebody comes around and cursors over or clicks on it. A text box shows up. The text box says 10000001 or Banner. Cursor over the graphic below to see what I mean.
Huh? You can actually make that text box say something useful (and something that might help drive traffic and sales) by doing the following:
Grab the html for the image link. Let's say you grab the Deal of the Week graphic. The code looks like this:
Scroll down a bit. See where it reads IMG alt="Banner "? Well, you can change that so it reads IMG alt="Click here for the Deal of the Week!">
Then when somebody cursors over or clicks on, the text box will say something useful. Give it a try!
1. Copy and paste the above code into Notepad 2. Make the change 3. Save as banner.html 4. Open in your browser of choice 5. The image will appear 6. When you cursor over, the new more useful text will appear (give it a try using the graphic below). Pretty cool huh?
You can also make our web site open in a new window rather than forcing your customer to jump from your web site to our web site (not that we have a problem with that).
Looking at the same bit of html, scroll to the bottom. At the end of that long link to LinkShare add target=_blank (we've already done this for you). Now when someone clicks on the image, the Scientifics web site will open in a new window.
NeatO!
Now for something less fun...typosquatting!
Typosquatting is when someone uses a variation of a domain name to drive traffic, for profit, to a merchant's web site. For example, we call our web site ScientificsOnline. You call your web site SciencetificsOnline (or something like that).
This practice is commonly known as "typo-squatting" and has been addressed many times by mitigating bodies, specifically the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva and I-CANN here in the United States. You can get sued doing stuff like this (not that any Edmund Scientific Affiliates ever would). You can read more about this policy here: http://www.icann.org/udrp/udrp-policy-24oct99.htm Or just Google typosquatting.
